Moth Trapping Event 2025

Another great moth trapping event today kindly organised by Janet Heath with Yorkshire moth recorders, Charlie Fletcher and Jill Warwick, and again hosted by Pippa Sterne in her garden.  We had 8 traps this time in Walton, Deepdale and central Boston Spa.

Charlie says, “the 18th county record of Yponomeuta plumbella is the star moth.  We wouldn't expect many 10K square records, as David Baker has recorded almost 700 species in his garden nearby at Tadcaster, but the seven species [below] are new, so that's great.  A really nice spread of species on what was not a particularly auspicious night, with every site turning up something different.”

  • Willow Ermine (Yponomeuta rorrella)
  • a moth (Yponomeuta plumbella)
  • a moth (Bryotropha terrella)
  • Holly Tortrix (Rhopobota naevana)
  • a moth (Pammene aurita)
  • Black Arches (Lymantria monacha)
  • White-point (Mythimna albipuncta)

Jill was personally thrilled to see the Black Arches, a moth which is moving north in the county and also the good numbers of Dusky Thorn, a species in national decline.

109 species were recorded in total which is a big improvement on last year!  Below is a list of moths that were found at each location and a gallery of photos taken:
