Simple, quick energy saving adjustments for your home.

What type of boiler do you have? Is your boiler powered by gas?

  • Do you have always available hot water (no airing cupboard with a separate tank for hot water)? If that is the case then you have a ‘Combi’ boiler.
    If you have a separate hot water tank then you have a ‘system’ boiler.
  • Was your boiler fitted after 2005? Does it have a plastic pipe underneath it going outside? If so, then you have a ‘condensing’ boiler which are up to 94% efficient.
  • The default was always to set the water flowing around your radiators to between 70 & 80 degrees Centigrade. If yours are too hot to touch, then your boiler is losing approx. 15% of its efficiency!
  • For ‘Combi’ boilers you can reduce the boiler’s flow temperature to closer to 60 degrees. The radiators the rads will be a little cooler to touch (but safer) and your home will take a tiny bit longer to heat up. However, your home will be much more comfortable (a more even heat) but vitally you will save a considerable sum of money.
  • For ‘System’ boilers, you can still save considerable sums but your hot water temperature needs to be altered too so please consult a knowledgeable engineer. Similarly, if your boiler is oil fired or pre 2005, please consult with a knowledgeable engineer.
  • Making changes to your boilers front controls is SAFE. Rest assured that if it doesn’t work out, you can simply put it back to where it started with absolute confidence! You cannot mess it up!

Hot water savings

Most homes have their hot water far too hot (65 degrees plus).

If you have to add cold water to make it safe/usable then you’re wasting on a number of fronts.

If you take baths, set your ‘Combi’ boiler’s hot water temperature to 55 degrees. If you shower only, reduce that to 52 degrees. Turning it down not only saves energy but it means you use less water too (to cool it).

If you have a system or oil boiler their hot water temperature can be reduced too, but please consult with a knowledgeable engineer before altering things.

Thermostatic Radiator Valves

They sense the room’s temperature and stop the flow of water through the radiator once the room has reached the temperature you have set. If any of yours are set to their highest they simply cannot work so will be costing you money.

In a typical family home, the settings for TRVs should be:

  • Sitting room/lounge – #3 (21 degrees)
  • Unused rooms – #1 (15 degrees)
  • Bedrooms – #2 (18 degrees)
  • Bathroom – #3 (21 degrees)

Feel the cold?  Turn the setting up by half a place.  Too warm? Turn the setting down half a place.

Importantly, give any changes you make, 24 hours to settle to see if the temperature is then as you want it.  Never turn one up to max (full on).

Know Your Thermostat!

  • When you leave the house, turn your heating down. Just 5 degrees makes a huge difference to both your energy bills and your emissions.
  • When you go away, turn the thermostat down to between 12 & 15 degrees Centigrade. Your home will be perfectly safe and you will save money.
  • If adjusting your thermostat when you are in, turn it up or down a ‘smidge’. Your home will heat up to its ‘normal’ temperature just as fast, but you’ll reduce your spend by cutting out waste.
  • Turning it to maximum when you’re cold makes ZERO difference to how fast your home warms up and will ultimately cost you more as ‘control’ is lost.

Other ways to save – investments.

  • Get you system properly serviced. A proper service means the boiler will lie in bits & take 1.5-2 hours.
  • Ensure your system is sludge free. Sludge reduces the transfer of heat from the water to the radiator.
  • A balanced system is most efficient. Water will always choose the path of least resistance so by balancing your system your whole home heats evenly & efficiently.
  • Get ‘Weather Compensation’ type controls fitted. These ensure you have just the right amount of heat in your radiators for the weather. On a ‘chilly day the temperature in your radiators not quite as warm as on a freezing snowy day. Often, they include an additional energy saving feature called, ‘optimised start and stop’. Simplistically, it’s an intelligent time clock which keeps you comfortable but does so whilst cleverly saving energy at the start and end of every day.
