Do you know your local Moths?

On Wednesday 17th July, there will be a moth trapping event in Boston Spa when traps, set the night before, will be opened, in order to record the range and numbers of species of moths in the area.

All are welcome to come along and observe this fascinating process, and have the moths identified by experts.

Venue: River House, 197 High Street, LS23 6AA.  Our grateful thanks to Pippa Sterne for hosting.

Time: 8am - 10.30am.  If you can’t make it for 8am, you can drop in at any time.

The event will be led by Dr Charlie Fletcher who is the macro-moth recorder for Yorkshire, macros being the larger, more noticeable moths we have. Charlie received the Butterfly Conservation Yorkshire Outstanding Volunteer Award in 2023 for all that he’s done to encourage and promote moth recording in the county.

Charlie’s mothing colleague is Jill Warwick, who is first and foremost a birder and licensed bird ringer, and developed a keen interest in moths in the 1980s.  Jill is married to Simon, who lived in Boston Spa from 1963 until 1982 when they married.  Simon set up Nosterfield Nature Reserve in 1996/97 where regular mothing events take place.  Simon received the MBE in 1996 for ‘services to nature conservation in North Yorkshire’.

Charlie and Jill began doing their peripatetic moth trapping around 2000, and have seen a huge surge in interest in moths since that time.

All the data they collect over the year from all over Yorkshire goes to producing the annual Yorkshire Moth & Butterfly Report and also goes to Butterfly Conservation HQ in Dorset.
